Return to Kafe Sobaka Restoran Pomegranate

As mentioned earlier, Buona Forchetta was closed for lunch as it was a weekday so we ended up going to our backup plan...

to the next neighborhood down from South Park which was Golden Hill...

At the corner of C and Broadway, you could see the cool sign and the adjacent reflection of the Turf Supper Club. If you go further north on Broadway, you will hit Pizzeria Luigi and Krakatoa. But no, weren't in a Pizza or sandwich mood...

I'm happy that MFH was feeling adventurous that day, so Russian/Georgian food it was. I wanted to revisit Kafe Sobaka since dining there last fall with the Educator GF's...

A different waitress than the one we had last time greeted and sat us in the big dining area, the one with the most light.

I noticed this time around that even the lamps on every table were eclectic. Hmmm, where's the Leg Lamp from "A Christmas Story" then?

If you haven't ever read their menu, you should read it. Here is the menu link. OMG, it's pretty funny.

We got the salad sampler. This is five different salads but six were given. One was a repeat, the lobio, a red bean and walnut spread/salad.

I don't remember the names of the salads other than the lobio, but in the middle was a carrot salad. The two rolled up things were stuffed eggplant (that was so delicious!), and on the left were two other types of eggplant salads. The tastes and textures were so different than what you'd think a salad would be.

MFH let me order a few things, while she ordered the main. This was my pick, the Piroshki (meat pies) which came with two more stuffed eggplant rolls. At a quick glance, I thought they were hollow bones with marrow!

There were so flaky outside made better by the roasted sesame seeds. The meat filling was finely ground with a mild seasoning.

Our Khachapuri (cheese pie) which was one big round piece. Our order from last time was already divided into four pieces and was a bigger portion as well. This seemed a bit on the burnt side. It didn't seem as good this time around to be honest.

As we were eating our lunch, we noticed that another entree that I knew we ordered was missing. This is when the service went downhill. I asked our waitress where our other entree was and she said we didn't order one. I remember telling her we wanted the Zarkhoe (a beef stew which is supposed to be simmered with sour fruits and root vegetables). She kind of gave us a bit of a snippy attitude and even sighed audibly when MFH asked for more water.

I don't think I'd get this again. It was $17.50 and while it looked and smelled good, seemed to be missing the sour fruits (some recipes I've seen online call for prunes). It seemed like a slapped together stew. The meat wasn't as soft as what I'd expect for this stew.

As for our bill, we noticed that she didn't give us our change so when I went to retrieve it, she told me that we only gave her "X" amount of money (which was way off). She had the money in a wad in her apron pocket and didn't bother to count it.  I let her know the change we expected back and that was given to us with a bit of an attitude as well, as if we were inconveniencing her for merely asking. This was a complete turn around from the service I had last time with my friends with a different waitress. That server was super nice, friendly, and attentive unlike this one who seemed to be going through the motions and negligent of customer needs. I won't hold this against the restaurant as I really like their food and still want to explore their menu. Bitch probably just rolled off the wrong side of the bed that day.

We were still up for dessert which happened to be down the street...

Wow, that service sounded terrible! I'm glad you'll still go back because of the food but seriously, that lady sounds like she needs an attitude check. Geeeeez. The meat pie thing looks awesome, I would totally dig that. The salads all look colorful and very different. I'm not a fan of eggplant but it still looks nice.

The service started off ok but got wierd after we realized she didn't get our full order in. she was a bit defensive when I questioned here. the server was a young girl (in her 20's). i wished we had the other server from before who was also young but was much friendlier and accomodating.

you would like that meat pie (piroshki)!!!!
