Even though it's out of the way for us, we made use of our time up there by going to several other places with Peterson's being the first stop...

Yes, it's literally on the corner of 9th and S. Escondido Blvd. It's open 24/7 and has a large selection of goodies...I'm sure they get their fair share of characters at 2 am...
Let's take a look, shall we...
Ya gotta love those "hand" seats. Very 70's. One thing about Peterson's that's kind of frustrating is that it's only a walk-up donut place. It is not a store where you can go in, ooh and aah at the donuts up close and personal and all. You have to do it all through an impersonal window.

More hand seats...

Their menu hangs over the covered seating area...

where you can peer into their windows and see the workers replenishing the trays from time to time.

They also have cronuts here, or rather, Peterson's version of cronuts. They don't give a fk here about calling it the "cray-nut" (Azucar's moniker), "cro-bar" (Donut Bar's version), the unwieldy "croissant donut" (used at Paris Baguette in Zion Market) or "Kronut" or whatever. Supposedly Dominique Ansel bakery has a trademark on the "cronut" name and doesn't want anyone else to use it except him. Well, not here. I've never had a cronut before but we got a few here today since it's available everyday and all the time, unlike some of the other places that overhype it and restrict customers to only one purchase. Good gosh, really now people.
Anyhow, you can see that their cronuts are "square" and heavily frosted on the top. They do not have a cream filling either like the original cronut does.

Another window had another assortment of wonderful looking donuts, some of them quite oversized like those frosted bars on the right.

Hmmmm...blueberry?

We ended up getting the blueberry frosted cake donut which I enjoyed later that day.

I wonder if they are doing these sprinkles because it's October slash fall slash Halloween?

These looked like frosted cake squares or maybe coffee cake.

Whatever this was, it was ginormous!

This was our "haul". Two cronuts, one frosted blueberry and one chocolate old fashioned.

The pink and chocolate iced cronut was mine. The icing was strawberry flavor. The donut itself was quite flaky but not crisp flaky.

This cronut was TC's choice - she liked the little crispy chocolate and white chocolate coated balls on top.

The blueberry frosted - it tasted just like blueberry yogurt on top.

Bert's oversized chocolate old fashioned. It wasn't as crisp as he would have liked. He wasn't a fan of the slight softness but he did like the flavor.

One more, the donuts before we took our bites. We had a cooler in the trunk since this was our first stop of that afternoon.

TC's cronut was flakey but not as flakey as a real croissant. The layers were kind of stuck together but pulled apart when eaten with the fingers.

This photo doesn't show the flakey layers that well but I still liked tearing this apart.

Bert wanted his own cronut so he got a chocolate frosted one...

(Ya like my non-Smart phone? It's from the Stone Ages, yo')
Only a few bites were taken and then kept in their cardboard receptacle, then kept in a cooler (covered with a plastic bag of course, we're anal like that). We still had another dessert place we wanted to hit up.
Well, I guess we can cross this cronut thing off our list. I'm sure there are better versions out there. I know Cathy from mmm-yoso really liked Paris Baguette's version, back they still called it a "Kronut" with a "K". You can also see Kirbie's post of PB's Kronut here. You can tell by their photos that the cronut was really quite flakey like a croissant should be.

Until then, I'm not going out of my way to wait in a long line to try a more authentic (and more expensive) cronut that's only offered during when the planets are in perfect alignment.

Will we go here again? Yes, but not for the cronuts even though I liked ours, especially the next day. And yes, but not in the near future until I can at least come up with a few other spots to visit/eat at to make our trip here worthwhile. This is like going to the moon people. Escondido is so damn far from Chula Vista!
Who else went to Peterson's?
Cathy of Mmm-Yoso had this clever post that had a compendium of donut shops, "The Elephant in the Room - Donut Shops" - December 23, 2012
Mary also went here this past summer - "Peterson's Donut Corner" - August 5, 2013 - This was before they started offering the cronut, but wait! That was covered by Darlene's visit, "Another San Diego Cronut Contender: Cronut at Peterson's Donut Corner" (August 26, 2013)and most recently, Kirbie who went last weekend..."Cronuts and more from Peterson's Donut Corner" (October 7, 2013).
It seems like everyone and their mother has sung the praises of Peterson's. Here are some reviews/articles/short blurbs:

There's a funny and inadvertently obscene picture of a chick holding up a giant twist with her mouth wide open!
SEE IT HERE, NOW!

Dayum, now THAT is a twist!

Haha I've yet to try a cronut yet... I guess the planets haven't aligned for me~ haha
So glad they're offering more and the cronut police hasn't shut them down or forced them to change the name. Haha.
hi jinxi - at least at this place you can get them any time.
hi darlene - yeah, even though they're not quite like the real cronut (no cream filling, not as flaky, and square)...
I went again on Saturday, but it was late at night (like after 9PM) and there were no cronuts. Or bars. Or anything I really wanted. But I did try the frosted blueberry and we had some donut holes so all was not lost. Daytime hours seems to have a better selection.
hi mary - sorry that you didn't get to try any of their cronuts. bummer.
