It had been awhile since our last visit and it was Bert's number one choice for dessert too...
We always call this place "Happy Happy Joy Joy" (from "Ren & Stimpy"). It's a Korean owned bakery run by an elderly couple and their three daughters. They are all super nice and always have a beautiful selection of pastries and cakes...

Such as these:

and these...

and also these lovelies here...

It's always so hard to decide on just one thing.

I haven't had their macs in awhile so I chose three along with our cakes.

Bert really likes their coffee here. They use the hand drip method and it is always so smooth. This was his mocha. I really loved the china cup and saucer. It had a silvery curley cue. A peek underneath the saucer revealed it to be the "Love Story" pattern by Mikasa.

I also had a mocha, but iced. Delicious this was. The smallest sized iced was 12 oz.

Our drinks and dessert selection below. See the empty seating? Yay for lack of crowds!

Here are those macs that I missed - salted caramel (removed from it's wrapper since it was quite sticky), strawberry, and oddly enough, French Vanilla, which was green. I normally don't like vanilla anything but I wanted to get it because of the color combination.

After having had so many other kinds of macs from different places in San Diego, the OC, Paris (thanks to Kirbie), and NYC, I have to say that Big Joy's don't quite meet the standards of ROCQ and Bouchon but they are still consistently good.
This was TC's, some sort of Mango dessert with cake and a mango piece inside.

My Chocolate Raspberry cake. Bert thought it was dry and didn't really like it as much as his own. I only ate about 1/4 because I was all sugared out.

Bert's Chocolate Fudge cake, complete with a candle provided by the ladies at Big Joy. They even gave us a Bic lighter ("flick that bick!", ha ha)...

His cake slice had little silver balls on them. So cute.

Because we're such Star Wars geeks (the ORIGINAL trilogy not those horrible prequels), I thought Bert would appreciate this:
Speaking of Darth Vader, TC has the coolest math teacher ever! He came in one day dressed in FULL Darth Vader regalia - cape, helmet and voice changer! He started off the period giving a math warmup and stalked the aisles intoning, "The warm up that you hold in your hands shall commence immediately. I believe fifteen minutes will suffice".
Then he uttered, "Be brave my young Padawans!" and strode up and down the aisles and breathed heavily over the kids shoulders as they did their math warm up!
I actually emailed him to tell him that I thought it was cool! If only all math teacher could be that creative and geeky!
Here is the most recent visit to Big Joy (which links previous visits):
