BTW, WTF is this supposed to mean?
A few years ago Domino's Pizza had a "BFD" pizza, a large unlimited topping pizza masquerading as a "Big Fantastic Deal" for $10. I'm sure there were a lot of sophomoric snortles of laughter in the executive board room with that brilliant idea. I actually remember seeing posters that had the letters in big and bold font, "BFD"...I couldn't believe they got away with THAT as an ad campaign...
In this most recent case, there is a new'ish sandwich shop on the outskirts of North Park (around the bend from the Boulevard sign on Park...you can't miss it. This is where we recently met up with the Horns (Darlene of My Burning Kitchen and Paul of Cool Jerk)...The initials bfd stand for "Big Front Door"..

As you can see, that pivoting door is quite huge!

Our sodas - The Horns' favorite brand, Faygo - the Rock and Rye flavor (a cream soda), Bert's butterscotch root beer and TC's curiously blue soda but was peach flavored! I loved the "Rock On" gift bag (contents to be shown later in this post)...

Paul and Darlene shared what I believe was their version of the French Dip sandwich (although I couldn't find it on their menu)...

Beefy goodness...

Their little 'bfd' stickers on their wrapped sandwiches were so cute. I want to wear one on my forehead like a bindi and tell people it's my mantra.

Bert gave up beef (but not pork or chicken) for Lent. He got a vegetarian sandwich, the Caprese (mozzarella, basil and tomato). We didn't know how big the sandwiches would be. If we ever go back here, I would probably just end up sharing instead of having one big sandwich to myself.

TC's "Avocado Highway" (avocado, bacon, parmesan cheese crisp, tomato, pressed garlic, and lettuce). Since she recently got braces again, she ended up taking out the cheese crisps and the bacon because both of those items were too thick and chewy for her. She didn't want to mess up her wires and brackets. I had a bite of this and thought, "Man, I should have ordered this!".

This was my sandwich, "Smoky the Meatloaf" which came with a side of ketchup. This was pretty hearty; the other half was enjoyed later that day for dinner! I didn't grow up eating meatloaf so to me, this is exotic!

One of the gifts in that "Rock On" gift bag was this, a chocolate gun with a rather violent statement! Straight outta Carson City.

The other contents included: An assortment of candy bars (in French!) from Darlene's recent trip to Montreal - Wunderbar, a Cadbury Toffee, a maple crunch chocolate bar, and an Oh Henry!, a Flying-V pen, and a sticker resembling the Tokidoki label from Johnny Cupcakes. We'll have to savor these and make them last!

Very cool and best of all, edible!
...."Nancy Babich"!
Who else went to Big Front Door?
It was Dennis's thorough post earlier this year which spurred us to try out this place.

Being the cheapskate that I am, I think the prices are a bit high, but on the "hipster" scale, it would be just about right. I mean, hipsters are the same people who would pay $9 for a bowl of fkg pho (really????) or $12 for three rolled tacos from the frou frou "Barrio Star" in Hillcrest (oh, hell to the no! Or $18 for an "artisanal" pizza at (insert name of gastropub du jour here). But no need to get your panties (or 'manties') wet simply because it's local/sustainable/farm-to-table/artisanal and whatever buzzwords make the urban hipsters weak in the knees! I mean, c'mon people it's just a sandwich but seriously, these are really good. Nice folks here. I like that it's not crowded outside and it's a few doors down from "Frock You", a vintage clothing store that I want to check out next time (because it was closed, dammit). Best of all, lunch was shared with great company.
*Nancy Babich is referenced from Cronenberg's recent film, "Cosmopolis" - it's the password to a voice activated gun.
Our next stop was at a local park just down the street...
