Day 4 - Breakfast with KDB @ Slappy Cakes

We were originally planning to go to Mount Hood with KDB but he was worried about the weather conditions. There was a big snow storm going on and he didn't want us to get stuck there, so instead we did our "Plan B"...

This was one of his favorite breakfast places in his neighborhood...

The SE quadrant of Portland is where we hung out for the majority of our trip. We figured we did downtown and all the touristy stuff already so we wanted to hang out where the locals hang out. What better person to hang out with than KDB! We got there bright and early in the cold, wet rain.

We were hungry and excited. Slappy Cakes is known for having table top grills where you can make your own pancakes.

KDB knew what he wanted already. We three figured out ours as well...

I liked the pancake art on the walls...

The condiments, which were mounted on the sideboard so it was raised off the table. The ketchup was a Portland brand.

TC ordered the pancakes of course. The waitress warned us not to touch the grill and begain oiling it up...

TC's pancakes - ($6 for an 8 oz bottle) . The pancake batter was in a squeeze bottle and you could pick sweet or savory ingredients (ranging from $1 to $2 for each additional ingredient). As you can see, TC went for the "sweet" by ordering it with chocolate chips and chocolate sauce ($1 each). The spatula was on top of those two plates. My only gripe was that the spatula was this thin, cheapy, and bendy plastic. It didn't seem sturdy enough. I thought a popular place like this would have better spatulas for some reason.

One of TC's pancake creations...

Well, well, well...if it isnt Crispy. Fried. Bacon.

It's actually called Chicken Fried Bacon on their menu. OMG, just look at that...

Hand battered bacon drizzled with housemade apple caramel syrup. It may sound odd to some, but combination was pretty spot on. The sweet sauce, the crispy crunch of the batter and the salty and fatty bacon were a total mouthgasm.

This was my Forest Mushroom Scramble ($9.50) - an omelette filled with mushrooms, spinach, lardons, and red onions. Served with potatoes or toast (or in my case, a biscuit). It was supposed to be topped with goat cheese but I asked for it NOT to have the goat cheese. Loved the lardons - pork is always a good choice. Nice, thick and chewy and if you were lucky, a bit of fat on it! The portion was quite large and I only managed half of it.  I really ate most of the vegetables and those pork pieces.

Now this was KDB's all time favorite dish at Slappy Cakes - the Pork Belly Benedict ($12). Described in their menu as "pork belly confit with cider marinated coleslaw topped with two poached eggs in a classic Hollandaise sauce; on the side were fried potatoes". This was a pretty heavy meal from the looks of it.

While Bert contemplated on getting the same dish as KDB, he ended up getting the Country Fried Steak ($11) topped with white sausage gravy, and served with fried potatoes and two eggs your way (scrambled). I had some of his chicken fried steak and it was great! I liked the crispy edges. I kind of wish I had his meal instead but what would make it perfect for me would be having the gravy on the side so my chicken fried steak would remain crispy instead of a soggy mess (not that this was a soggy mess, I just don't like wet food). The verdict? Bert like.

More of my entree...

Just look at that pork belly from KDB's benedict plate...

Nice mutant pancake...I made one too!

Who else ate at Slappy Cakes?

Here are some PDX blogger post on this cool breakfast place:

Edwin Himself - He had brunch! Not sure if he is from PDX or San Diego (a brief perusal of his blog had some San Diego references like Turf Club and the Belly Up Tavern)

Whoa chicken fried bacon! I'd try that. The pork belly benedict also looks really delicious. Making my own pancakes at the table doesn't sound exciting to me, maybe because I can do that at home? It's a neat concept anyway (and you don't have to do the dishes).

loved the chicken fried bacon but i wouldn't like the benedict because i don't like hollandaise sauce or eggs made that way. it looked good though!

yeah, the pancake making isn't that exciting for me but it was fun for TC....
